Meet The Nectar Team - Aurore Jaballah, Accounting & Finance

What drew you to Nectar and the world of commercial beekeeping?

I lived for four years in India, and I faced the best and also the worst that humans can do. The impact of our lifestyle is really huge on our environment, fauna, and flora. I recently moved to Montreal and I had clearly in mind to find a job in a firm with values related to nature, ecology, something like that. The idea really took shape during a discussion with friends, who told me about Nectar, this fantastic project. They were working on recruitment and they told me that Nectar was looking for an accountant so I said okay, why not! So it’s actually Nectar and the bees who flew to me.

How did you become interested in accounting and finance?

I think it’s mainly because I like everything to be square and clean, and in the right place. It probably comes from my distant German influence - I think it’s related. More seriously, my best grades in school were in accounting so I was logically oriented this way, and once I started working I saw that the job is completely different depending on the company you work for. It depends on the field, and what the company is doing. What Nectar is doing is really challenging and exciting.

What upcoming BeeTrack and Nectar developments are you most excited about?

I’m involved in the development of Ferme Nectar. This is a whole new world for me, and it’s really interesting. I think I learned something new everyday since I started working with Evan and Nico. I’m quite excited for this part of my job. Ferme Nectar is a great project and I’m really lucky and grateful for this once in a lifetime opportunity. I’m really happy.

What’s your favourite part about working for Nectar?

Discovering the world of bees and beekeepers with my passionate colleagues is really my favourite part. They always share resources like podcasts or presentations, news, articles, it’s really interesting to get in touch with that. I’m also looking forward to my first field trip next week to Ferme Nectar and start the summer beekeeping. It’s an opportunity for me to leave the numbers for a moment and to be hands on.

When you’re not working to secure the pollinated food supply, what do you like to do?

I usually spend time with my family and friends in nature, walking or biking. I also practice and teach Yin Yoga. It’s very mindful and peaceful, it seems that bees like calm people by the way so it fits well; and I read a lot.

If you were a pollinator, what type would you be and why?

I grew up in the countryside of eastern France, surrounded by hoverflies. They are silent workers that have always fascinated me by their hovering flight and the way they follow people. Even today, I often have a hoverfly land on my shoulder, it’s so cute. It also reminds me of the good times of my childhood.
