Teaching Staff | English Language Courses | Bath Academy

I am a languages graduate with a Diploma qualification in EFL. I started my teaching career at a language school in Bournemouth before becoming an EFL lecturer in Southampton. I have since taught general, business and academic English to both young learners and adults in Bath and Bristol. Most recently my teaching has been focused on the IELTS and IGCSE exams. In my spare time I enjoy walking and going to the theatre.
Hi, I’m John and I’m passionate about teaching English as a second language. I achieved my CELTA qualification in 2014 and taught in Spain for five years. I’ve been back for two years now and have enjoyed working at Bath Academy during that time. This year I have been appointed to a Personal Tutor role as well as teaching, which gives me further opportunity to serve our students from all over the world as they improve their English and do well in their exams.
I trained to teach EFL in 1998 and I moved to Taiwan where I began my English teaching career. I have extensive experience in teaching General English at all levels and preparing students for IELTS. I really enjoy helping students develop their skills in English. With a Master’s degree in Business and experience in Banking, I also teach English for Business. My interests include music, cinema, bird-watching, reading and horticulture.
I passed my CELTA in 2018 and have gone on to teach with ERASMUS leaders in language in Valencia, summer schools at Bath Spa University and Eastbourne College. I passed DELTA module 1 earlier this year and have been building my knowledge and experience with online students from across the globe. I have experience in teaching business English, Cambridge examinations and ESOL. I am passionate about the English language and the power of education to improve lives. In my spare time I compose piano music and enjoy family life.
I originally joined Bath Academy as an ELT teacher and gradually took on a marketing role as the academy evolved, helping rebrand the school with a new logo and new website. Originally from Canada, I moved to the UK in 1997 and recently returned after living abroad in Paris and Florida. The challenge of living and working in different countries as well as learning a new language inspired me to teach others, so I completed my CELTA at City of Bristol College and am pleased to be using my skills both as a content marketer and teacher at the academy. I also have a Diploma in Journalism, am a freelance writer/photographer and regular contributor to Project Calm Magazine.
